Ling 590P Class 2.2 (09/15/26) Modeling vertical phenomena
Announcements
- I added Gussenhoven (2004)'s chapter on downtrends into
readings/w2, it's a great, more detailed follow-up to the intro we had last class. And thanks to Roger we also have Connell (2011)'s handbook chapter in there too!
- I also added a rather devastating review of Cooper and Sorenson (1981), which I had mentioned as talking about toplines, written by Pierrehumbert and Liberman (1982). (Cooper and Sorenson is also in
readings/w2.
- I came across a study that provides evidence that AI voices can be used for fine-grained phonetic production experiments: Huffaker, Holt and Nozari. (Why would that be useful?)
- Prep for next week:
- Pierrehumbert and Beckman (1988) Ch 1 intro and Ch 2 on using phonetic data to argue for the phonological representation of tones, underspecification
- Do I have any volunteers to dig into the AM trainer or ToDI (or also potentially further into LP84?)?
- Working on figuring out a potential lab based on LP84...
Agenda
Starting to work through Quarto notebook I started in Liberman and Pierrehumbert (1984) which I wll abbreviate as LP84...! Under code/ directory in our shared Google drive.
