LING 590P 9/22/26: Class 3.1
Tonal underspecification and association
Announcements
- Tone and Intonation conference call for ppers (end of May in Hong Kong), abstracts due beginning of December.
- October 1 class: Kristine traveling, you will be playing around with AM trainer together. Note: use top download link, the other one doesn't work
- Homework over next week: work through ToDI tutorial and leave comments/questions/complaints, etc. in Readings forum doc. Then one of you could potentially talk about the phonetic implementation of tones in the github repository later in the semester. I am not sure how long it's going to take different people to work through this---it may depend on many individual factors! I expect people to spend at least 3 hours going through things.
- I put a bunch more readings into w3 and made a README doc that tries to say a little bit about why I included each reading
Agenda (chalk talk mostly today)
- What happened to PB88 reading?
- Intro/review on the idea of tonal association
- Associated tones: Diagnosing prosodic boundary tones vs. pitch accents: stretching example
- Squishing example: Gussenhoven (2014)
